The prototype subject
One of the original pre-grouping railway companies, the North Eastern Railway had some of the most iconic and instantly recognisable lineside railway architecture. A large proportion of which is still standing today if not actually in operational railway use. The S4 signal box was of stone, brick or timber construction depending on the availability of local building materials or whether the box was to be located on a weight sensitive embankment. Vast glazed viewing areas above the locking room are synonymous with the S4 design.
This model is derived from Melton South signal box in the East Riding of Yorkshire. Built in 1912 it is typical of the many line boxes in the eastern areas of Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and further north to the Borders. All the dimensions of the box were taken by one of its career signalmen so you are assured of an accurately modelled subject in kit form.
